Stevenson Fire Department Drill - April 20, 2008

GBARC, assisted by Valley Amateur Radio Club, provided communications support to the Stevenson Fire Department drill where the Department exercised their water supply response plan. The drill objective was to determine how quickly and in what quantity water could be delivered to a house fire where no public water supply or hydrants are available. Eight tanker trucks from Monroe and surrounding communities were tasked with transporting water from two different ponds and a stream to the incident site where three folding water tanks were erected. The Tanker trucks dumped their water loads into the tanks from where it was pumped to extinguish the simulated house fire (actually to a holding pond).

Under the direction of the Monroe Fire Department and the Monroe ARES Emergency Coordinator and in conjunction with the Derby Office of Emergency Management, GBARC stationed communicators and equipment at the three water supply sites and the incident site. Twenty-two amateur radio operators performed communication tasks and recorded tanker status as they filled at the supply sites and dumped at the incident site. Using this real time information, the Fire Department was able to route tankers to fill sites that could best service them at the moment. The Derby OEM Quick Response Communications Vehicle (Hambulance) was initially stationed at the staging area then moved on to a potential shelter site, Masuk High School. After the drill, the GBARC maintained logs were used to determine total water transported as well as the efficiency of each supply site and tanker. Below are scenes from the drill.
